In the Mafia Islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, girls face an unfair challenge when it comes to education. A significant part of this is due to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene.
Girls on the Mafia Islands experience significant difficulties in fully participating in education due to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene.
Many girls have to stay home from school for a week each month due to menstruation, resulting in them missing up to two and a half months of schooling each year. This leads to a significant gap in the level of education between boys and girls, as boys have greater opportunities to continue their education without interruption.
Sustainable Ocean Women Future (SOWF) aims to address this challenge by raising funds to distribute menstrual pads to schools on the Mafia Islands and providing education on menstrual hygiene.
We will not only ensure that girls have access to necessary hygiene products but also provide them with knowledge about menstruation and related topics, including pain management and other challenges associated with menstruation.
We have already implemented similar projects with great success in Zanzibar, where we have seen significant improvements in girls' participation in education and their overall well-being.
Now, we want to do the same for girls on the Mafia Islands and contribute to creating a more fair and inclusive education for all.
We invite you to support our work by contributing funds or resources to ensure that girls on the Mafia Islands receive the support they need to complete their education. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these girls and help shape a better future for their community.
SOWF is committed to creating positive changes for women and society as a whole - both through our Sustainable Ocean program and our Women Future Chicken Farming Academy project. By also focusing on providing girls on the Mafia Islands with access to menstrual hygiene and education on menstrual hygiene, we believe that we can help break down barriers and open doors to a brighter future for young girls - who will all be change makers in the future for everyone.
