Sustainable Ocean
Sustainable Ocean is an initiative working to promote sustainability and preserve the ecosystem in the waters around the Mafia Islands and Zanzibar. Our focus is on reducing plastic pollution on beaches and in the ocean by organizing beach clean-ups and clearing plastic and other debris from the seabed. We also address the issue of lost fishing gear such as traps and nets, to prevent ghost-fishing, which contributes to long-term harm to the marine environment.
Through information and training among local fishermen, we shed light on overfishing and the importance of sustainable fishing practices. We prioritize engaging women from the Women's Future Chicken Farming Academy to lead this training process among male fishermen, trusting in their ability to influence change through their own sustainable businesses.
In addition to clean-up efforts, we also implement technological solutions like RESCUNIT, an electronic buoy technology, to reduce the loss of fishing gear, prevent ghost-fishing and promote more responsible fishing practices for the future.

Cleanup projects
As an example of the importance of cleanup, we see that plastic pollution is a critical global environmental issue impacting marine life and the health of ocean ecosystems. Africa’s coastlines are increasingly facing the detrimental effects of this pollution on their rich and diverse fishery resources.

It’s essential to inform and engage local communities, especially fishermen, about the dangers of pollution and the importance of adopting sustainable fishing practices that minimizes its negative outcome for biomass and future catch.
